I was laying in bed the other night, iamamiwhoami’s music swirling around in my head like a music box wound to play for days, and I was wondering to myself when the heck the next video was going to come out. Granted, this project has been going on for years now, so I’m accustomed to waiting a lot between albums, but kin spoiled me by releasing a new video every few weeks.
To be fair, the original bounty album had a lot of time between songs:
b – March 14th, 2010
o – April 12th, 2010 (≈ month)
u-1 – May 3rd, 2010 (≈ month)
u-2 – May 7th, 2010 (4 days)
n – June 2nd, 2010 (≈ month)
t – June 30th, 2010 (≈ month)
y – August 4th, 2010 (≈ 2 months)
Within that album, the longest time between videos was more than a month. So, this isn’t strange. Even moreso, 2010114 came out three months later. Then, ; john came out in May of the following year, a whole half a year later, with clump following two months after that. kin didn’t begin until the next year, a whole half a year later than clump. By that time though, it seemed to have structured its format and stuck to a schedule to keep people excited. kin rolled out like a magnificent serial and kept my appetite active, kept the music really on the tip of my tongue at all times.
So I entered this new album thinking that I’d be seeing more songs every two weeks. But given the contextual clues of the video, this is a lot like ; john, and I should probably anticipate that it could be a few more months before I see something else in terms of a regular album single release schedule.
But back to my original narration, I was laying in bed about to fall asleep, thinking about what day it was, and I remembered that fountain had been released on January 21st. Aquarius. The Water-bearer. Fountain.
I’m not even much for Astrology, but iamamiwhoami has always had a deep root in mythology, archaic stories, and symbolism throughout their videos. I honestly don’t believe they put anything in their videos that doesn’t belong there. It’s all very controlled, very deliberate in what they want to show in every shot. It’s got that David Lynch attentiveness to it, and it runs with its own themes, hides things for you to find.
So, yes. Let’s play with some ideas here.
fountain was released on January 21st, which is the first day of Aquarius in the tropical zodiac.
Imagery is what really drove it home. What do we have to work with here. Well, let’s see:
- Dawn on a sea shore with a fire burning the box from kin. Jonna is seen in the black leotard (or possibly the outfit from goods)
- Fish in a clear cube aquarium on pebble beach as sun rises. Rock formations in the distance.
- Dew on the pines
- Lots of mountains and waves, tides coming in.
- White boat with two lanterns
- Killer whales
- Jonna in a white checker/scale patterned hood, akin to a more covered-up ; john. Soft, terry-cloth-like fabric.
- An icy brow/temples as the video goes along (going to colder areas?)
- A clear jar of ashes (or sand), poured into the sea.
- Jonna dancing on the shore near waterfalls, geysers in a plastic body suit and boots.
- Blank pages floating on the water as Jonna sleeps in the boat.
- Shots of landscapes from previous videos.
- Return to the fish aquarium which is now empty.
- End with the full moon in the sky.
That’s pretty much it. But the Aquarius imagery is there, with a twist.
Aquarius is the water-bearer. He is depicted as a man pouring out an everflowing urn of water. Jonna pours out an urn in a similar fashion to the constellation.
Aquarius represents Ea/Enki in Babylonian/Sumerian mythology. The god of mischief, crafts, water, intelligence, and creation. Ea may come from a root meaning “life” or “spring/running water” as well as “the house of water” in Sumerian. He is often shown wearing a horned crown and the skin of a carp, and is also symbolized by a fish. He was also known as the master of the Abzu, the groundwater located below the earth. So… springs, fountains, geysers, blowholes. (We also see whales. Which also have blowholes.) Given that “Ab” also means “semen” as well as “water,” it’s not a stretch to pull more fertilization imagery into this, as iamamiwhoami has done it plenty of times before. I could go as far as saying the plastic body suit is a bit of a condom.
Enki is also represented by a goat, which is also an animal that iamamiwhoami used in bounty to represent the b (baa). Note that in b she is also covered in plastic. Shedding skin? New chapter? Blank sheets of paper?
Jonna is also in all white in this new chapter, reflecting references to ; john. A lot of “clean” imagery. And note the checkerboard/scale pattern on her robe, like Enki… In the epic of Enki and Ninhursag, it reads:
“The land of Dilmun is a pure place, the land of Dilmun is a clean place,
The land of Dilmun is a clean place, the land of Dilmun is a bright place;
He who is alone laid himself down in Dilmun,
The place, after Enki is clean, that place is bright”
I know, I know. I’m reaching. But maybe… …
Quite powerful is also the suggestion of a similar story in the mythology of Enki to the mandrake growing from a hanged man’s semen (which is made very clear in bounty). In the story Ninhursag takes Enki’s semen from Uttu’s womb and plants it in the ground, from which eight plants grow. We don’t have a good translation for the plants that grow from this semen, but based on other mythologies, why not the mandrake? The basis of the story behind iamamiwhoami when it began.
But the most striking… is the obvious pouring out of the urn.
It’s Enki, it’s Aquarius. It fits the constellation’s motion.
And to emphasize it even further, Pisces (the fish) is just below Aquarius in the sky map, as well as the next sign in the zodiac.
Hell, there could even be some secrets hidden in her sporadic dancing. They certainly have a structured, sign-language feel to them. Or they could mean nothing.
So, if my creative guesses are right, then we should be seeing another video soon. Pisces technically started today. So will we see one today?
Yes, a lot of this is just hoping. 🙂 But it’s always been a lot of fun to try to “figure out” the plotlines and imagine what they could be about.
